Israel of Bamberg
German rabbi
Israel of Bamberg was a prominent 13th-century German rabbi who held the position of Chief Rabbi of Bamberg, Germany. He succeeded his esteemed teacher, Rabbi Samuel of Bamberg, in this role. As a respected Tosafist, Israel made significant contributions to the field of Judaism, particularly in the realm of Talmudic commentary.
Israel's scholarly work, known as tosafot, focused on various Talmudic tractates, including Shabbat and Avodah Zarah. Although his original writings are no longer extant, his ideas and commentary were quoted by later scholars, such as Mordecai ben Hillel and a 15th-century Italian codifier. In his work, Israel often relied on the teachings of his teacher, Rabbi Samuel of Bamberg, demonstrating the strong influence of his mentor on his own scholarly approach.
