Kalonymus Kalman Shapira

Polish rabbi and scholar (1889–1943)

Kalonymus Kalman Shapira was a prominent Polish rabbi and scholar, born in 1889. He served as the Grand Rabbi of Piaseczno, Poland, and was a prolific author, producing several notable works on Judaism. His teachings and writings had a significant impact on his community, and he was particularly revered for his wisdom and spiritual guidance.

During World War II, Rabbi Shapira was imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto, where he continued to teach and inspire his students. Between 1939 and 1942, he delivered a series of homilies on the weekly Torah portion, which were later collected and published under the title Esh Kodesh. Tragically, Rabbi Shapira's life was cut short when he was murdered by the Nazis in 1943, along with the rest of the Warsaw ghetto community, who were deported to the Treblinka concentration camp. Despite his untimely death, Rabbi Shapira's legacy lives on through his writings, which remain an important part of Jewish scholarship and spirituality.
