Leo Wiener

American linguist (1862–1939)

Leo Wiener was a prominent American scholar, born in 1862, whose work spanned multiple disciplines, including history, linguistics, and literature. His expertise in Slavic languages and Yiddish culture led to the publication of several notable works, cementing his reputation as a leading authority in these fields. Wiener's historical writings on Yiddish literature, in particular, remain significant, with his book "The History of Yiddish Literature in the Nineteenth Century" being a notable example of his contributions to the field.

Throughout his career, Wiener demonstrated his versatility as a scholar and translator, producing works on a range of subjects, including African and Mesoamerican history. His books "Africa and the Discovery of America" and "Mayan and Mexican Origins" showcase his broad interests and expertise. Wiener also made significant contributions to the translation of Russian literature, notably with his complete edition of Tolstoy's works, which provided a literal translation of the texts. Although his translations of Tolstoy's major novels were eventually overshadowed by other translators, Wiener's scholarly work continues to hold value, and he remains a respected figure in his field until his death in 1939.
