Yehoshua Rokeach
Polish rabbi
Yehoshua Rokeach was a prominent Polish rabbi who played a significant role in the Jewish community during the 19th century. As the second Rebbe of the Belz Hasidic dynasty, he earned the respect and admiration of his followers, who affectionately referred to him as the Mitteler Ruv. Rokeach's approach to leadership combined a deep understanding of Torah scholarship with a practical and sensible approach to everyday life, allowing him to effectively guide and support the thousands of Hasidim who looked to him for guidance.
Rokeach's leadership extended beyond his role as Rebbe, as he also worked to counter the influence of the Haskalah movement, which was gaining traction in Jewish communities across Poland. In response to this trend, he founded the Machzikei Hadas organization, a pioneering effort aimed at promoting traditional Jewish values and practices. Through his work, Rokeach helped to preserve and strengthen the Jewish community, leaving a lasting legacy as a devoted and visionary leader.
