Baruch ben Samuel
German payytan (c. 1150–1221)
Baruch ben Samuel was a prominent figure in the Jewish community of Mainz, Germany, during the early 13th century. He is believed to have lived from around 1150 to 1221. As a Talmudist, Baruch ben Samuel demonstrated a deep understanding of Jewish law and scripture.
Baruch ben Samuel is also notable for his work as a payytan, a composer of liturgical poetry. His contributions to this field have endured, and he remains a significant figure in the history of Jewish liturgical literature. To distinguish him from another scholar, Baruch ben Isaac, he is sometimes referred to as Baruch of Mainz, highlighting his connection to the city where he was active.
