Born in 1903, he spent the majority of his career in the United States, where he established himself as a leading scholar and public intellectual. Bettelheim's work primarily focused on the education and treatment of emotionally disturbed children, with a particular emphasis on autism, a topic on which he was one of the earliest writers.
Throughout his career, Bettelheim held various esteemed positions, including professor at the University of Chicago and director of the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School for Disturbed Children. His academic pursuits were also influenced by Freudian psychology, which played a substantial role in shaping his research and writings. After 1973, Bettelheim continued to teach at Stanford University, further solidifying his reputation as a renowned expert in his field.
