Joseph ibn Naḥmias

Joseph ibn Naḥmias was a Jewish scholar active in 14th-century Toledo, Castile. As a student of the prominent rabbi Asher ben Jehiel, Naḥmias developed a strong foundation in Jewish studies. His scholarly pursuits, however, extended beyond traditional Jewish texts to the field of astronomy. During his lifetime, Naḥmias made significant contributions to the field, showcasing his intellectual versatility.
Naḥmias' most notable work in astronomy is Nūr al-ʿĀlam, written in Arabic between approximately 1330 and 1350. This work was later translated into Hebrew by an anonymous scholar, also in the 14th century, ensuring its reach and impact within the Jewish community. In addition to his astronomical endeavors, Naḥmias authored commentaries on key Jewish texts, including the Pentateuch, Pirkei Avot, and Proverbs. These writings demonstrate his commitment to exploring and interpreting a wide range of subjects, from biblical studies to scientific inquiry.
