Samson ben Pesah Ostropoli
Polish rabbi & martyr (1600–1648)
Samson ben Pesah Ostropoli was a prominent Polish rabbi and Kabbalist of the 17th century, hailing from Ostropol. His life's work was deeply rooted in Judaism, and he gained a significant following in the region. As a respected spiritual leader, Ostropoli played a vital role in his community, guiding his followers in their faith and practice.
Tragically, Ostropoli's life was cut short during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, a period of intense turmoil and violence. In 1648, he met a heroic and tragic end at Polonnoye, Volhynia, where he was killed by Cossacks. Alongside 300 of his devoted followers, Ostropoli chose to face his death with courage and conviction, gathering in the synagogue to pray and prepare for their ultimate sacrifice. Ultimately, they were massacred by the enemy, leaving behind a legacy of faith and martyrdom that would be remembered for generations to come.
