Solomon ben Hasdai

Solomon ben Hasdai was a prominent figure in the Jewish community, specifically within the Karaite tradition. As the son of Hasdai ben Hezekiah, he came from a notable lineage and went on to hold a significant position as the tenth Karaite exilarch. His ancestry was rooted in the house of Anan ben David, a foundational figure in Karaism.

Solomon ben Hasdai's tenure as exilarch marked a pivotal period for the Karaite community. Unfortunately, his reign coincided with a time of great turmoil, as many Karaite communities faced destruction at the hands of the Seljuks. This period of upheaval had a profound impact on Karaism, leading to a sharp decline in its influence as a rival to rabbinical Judaism. Notably, Solomon ben Hasdai was the last descendant of Anan ben David to be recognized by the Karaites as their nasi, signaling the end of an era for the community.
