Vladimir Kara-Murza

Vladimir Kara-Murza is a Russian opposition politician born in 1981. He has been actively involved in promoting civil society and democracy in Russia through his work with various organizations. As a protégé of Boris Nemtsov, a murdered Russian dissident, Kara-Murza has continued to advocate for democratic values in his home country. He holds a key position as vice-chairman of Open Russia, a non-governmental organization founded by Mikhail Khodorkovsky, which aims to foster a more democratic society in Russia.

Kara-Murza's involvement in Russian politics is multifaceted. He was elected to the Coordinating Council of the Russian Opposition in 2012 and later served as deputy leader of the People's Freedom Party from 2015 to 2016. In addition to his political work, he is also a filmmaker and has directed two documentaries, including They Chose Freedom and Nemtsov. His efforts have been recognized internationally, and he was awarded the Civil Courage Prize in 2018. As of 2021, Kara-Murza serves as a Senior Fellow at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, further solidifying his commitment to human rights and democracy.
